We’re proud to have been part of the project team behind the Waikato Hospital Molecular Biology Laboratory refurbishment, which has been recognised with a Gold Award at the Master Builders NZ Commercial Project Awards 2025.
As structural engineers in Waikato, New Zealand, GDC Consultants contributed our expertise to this complex healthcare infrastructure project. We collaborated with Fosters (Entrant and Construction Lead), APG Architects, Innerscape, and Octa Project Management to deliver a critical facility upgrade at Waikato Hospital—while ensuring the lab’s 24/7 operations continued without disruption.
Located in Hamilton, Waikato, the refurbished laboratory now supports over 125 staff and processes more than 5,000 medical tests daily. Our role focused on delivering seismic engineering upgrades to enhance the building’s structural resilience, all while operating in a live hospital environment under strict healthcare operational protocols.
This healthcare construction project was delivered in five carefully staged phases, prioritising minimal dust, noise, and vibration to safeguard ongoing lab work. We’re honoured to have contributed to a project that not only enhances vital healthcare infrastructures in the Waikato region but also sets a new benchmark for Construction in live hospital environments. Additionally, Fosters' innovative noise control plan, developed for this project, has been adopted nationally by Te Whatu Ora Health NZ, further raising the standard for healthcare construction.
Congratulations to the full project team on this well-deserved national recognition!
